Yes, that is a praying mantis, but we don't likes hm. We discovered they eat hummingbirds.
That looks like the size of our insects here in Australia... when I first moved here they scared the [insert appropriate word] out of me!

The gals eat the heads of their mates, which is gross. I have to admit they eat a lot of bugs, though. I'm not surprised they'd take on a hummingbird. Some of these critters are quite large.

I never heard of them eating hummingbirds, but they also eat a TON of the bad bugs in the garden. You're lucky to have one in your yard.

We think they are fascinating...don't see them too much here. But...we did not know they could prey on a hummingbird...pardon our pun...
