More Thursday Thirteen Books

Thirteen Books I Read Recently

  1. The Everything Dog Training and Tricks Book by Gerilyn J. Bielakiewicz - packed full of helpful advice. I hope everyone will take the advice about not leaving your pets alone in parked cars when it is hot out.

  2. Underdog, Training the Mutt, Mongrel, and mixed Breed at Home by Mordecai Siegal and Mattew Margolis ~ The book explains how to find the mutt for you. Oh and the trainers do the training in evening dress. There is a lot of talk about the temperament of dogs; the nervous dog, the nervous-shy dog, the nervous-aggressive dog, the shy dog, the stubborn dog (Fenris is a little stubborn sometimes), the sedate dog (Fenris also shows signs of being a sedate dog, for a puppy he is very calm so I think as he ages this will be his temperament),and the aggressive dog. At the end of the book they show several "famous" TV and Movie dogs, that are Mutts.

  3. Dream Chaser by Sherrilyn Kenyon ~ Thanks to Katra Xypher has one month on earth to redeem himself (which Xypher doesn't belive is possible) or make sure Satara joins him in hell. Satara arranges for him to be chained to a weak human (Simone), if she dies Xypher dies. There is just one thing Simone is only half human and Jaden seems determined to protect her.

  4. Mutts America's Dogs ~ Some heartwarming stories about how wonderful mutts are and a reminder that mixed breed dogs (and cats) die needlessly every day. One story really upset me though and reminded me how cruel humans can be. In 1957 a two year old Samoyed Husky mix, Laika, was sent into space (she was the first mutt in space). Laika spent six days in space and then they shut off her oxygen supply. I think suffocating must be a horrible way to die and Laika deserved better then that. No experiments should be done on animals that results in their dying painfully. I read more about her here and the facts seem to be a little different then those in the book, but they did send her into space knowing she would die, it is only the method and time of her death (which was undoubtedly painful) that differs.

  5. The Dark Hunter Companion by Sherrilyn Kenyon with Alethea Kontis - good if you need a laugh or something light to read.

  6. Winter Born by Sherrilyn Kenyon - How Dante meet Pandora.

  7. Born of the Night by Amanda Ashley - Reyes was cursed to be a werewolf and sworn to avenge his father. Then he meet Shanara.

  8. 15 Minutes to a Great Dog by Kevin Michalowski - some practical tips.

  9. Controlling Your Dog Away From You by John J. Romba - I didn't care for this book.

  10. 21 Days to Train Your Dog by Colin Tennant - I am thinking of getting a Face Collar for Fenris as he likes to pull.

  11. Make It Last Forever by L.A. Banks - Tara finds Jack Rider and makes him a warrior so he can guard the Great Huntress.

  12. Teach Your Dog to Behave by Bashkim Dibra with Elizabeth Randolph - An enjoyable read. Fenris is a really good puppy and all the training books I have been reading highlight what a gem he is.

  13. Red Moon Rising by Lori Handeland - Maya is suffering from writer's block until a skinwalker threatens her life and a handsome hero comes to her rescue.

Chopstix

Lauren's Zoo is a very special place as they rescue special needs animals. One of the dogs they rescued Chopstix has been returned to the rescue and they need financial help to care for her.

From Lauren's Zoo
Through the generosity of strangers, we were able to get Chopstix' many orthopedic issues addressed, and after a year in our care, we placed her in what should have been her forever home. Chopper has been living 'the good life' for the first time in her life, but now her existence is yet again in jeopardy and she needs to ask for assistance. Because of the nature of Chopper's original injuries, she received a lot of orthopedic x-rays but never any chest x-rays. Why? Because at the time there was nothing wrong with her breathing, and we were already exposing her very tiny body to a lot of repeat radiation. Now, we have discovered that Chopstix suffered a diaphragmatic hernia from her original abuse. The vet is totally shocked that the hole in her diaphragm has not caused her more issues than it has before now. This is a life-threatening issue, and Chopper needs yet another surgery asap. The estimate is $2600, and there is only one vet in town who has the specialized equipment that Chopstix requires in order to be anesthetized for such a delicate procedure. Please, we are begging yet again for your generosity. Chopstix has overcome so much in her past. It would be a real shame to lose her now when we know that she can be fixed.

Whiskers & Socks 2005

Twins on Tuesday

I like to sleep on top of the homeschool files. This is a very good spot to observe everything that is going on.

Scylla the chow hound likes to sleep in the dining room. That way she is always present when food is served.

Mancat Monday

I am keeping Mommy's chair warm. I like to sit in her lap while we visit all our blogging friends. Especially on Mancat Monday. ~Socks

ASPCA OPPOSES MANDATORY SPAY AND NEUTER

We are glad to hear this ASPCA OPPOSES MANDATORY SPAY AND NEUTER. While we think it's a good idea to have your pet spayed or neutered we don't think it should be mandatory. We also think having low cost spay/neuter programs in place will do more to reduce the pet population then making it mandatory would, as the cost is the reason most of the people we know have unspayed/neutered pets.

Scylla on Sunday

A cats work is never done. And we bets you thought Mommy was our typist. The cat is out of the bag, it's me Scylla. I do all the gardening too. I really tried to prepare a thoughtful entertaining post for you, but I was just too tired .............

Parting is such sweet sorrow

Charlie was one of the first friends we made when we started cat blogging. We will miss her very much. She was one of our special Not of My Species Friends when it was still just us cats. She invited us on a pawsome cruise. We shared a pawsome adventure in Ireland with Charlie and she was kind enough to babysit Scylla & Charybdis who were young kittens at the time. And we had such fun with her in Italy. Charlie you will be greatly missed, but you will always live in our hearts and we are the better for having known you. ~Slán go fóill (Goodbye for now) Socks, Scylla, Charybdis, & Fenris

We wishes to thank Zoolatry for the graphic.

Do you think the fence will PROTECT me from Charybdis?

Flowers on Friday

When Daddy built the raised bed in the front yard Mommy begged, pleaded, groveled and promised all sorts of things if he would build another raised bed around the bird-feeder. First she had to take all the rocks away and dig up all the flowers that were in there. She moved them to the butterfly garden as they were not doing good here. We don't think they got enough sun in the summer. It's sunny here in the spring until the Sycamore and Red Maple get their leaves.

The PURPLE Wisteria down at the butterfly garden is doing great.

These PURPLE wildflowers are living in our greenhouse. Mommy wants Daddy to plant them in the Whiskers Memorial Butterfly Garden one day.

Alasandra's Place: Mr Stephen Hiers I am tired of your noise pollution

Romeo The Cat is Famous

There is an article about him in USA Today, Twitter sensation Romeo the cat raising real dough for shelters

*We wanted to add that Maggy & Zoey and the Zoolatry Human, Ann sent us the button. They were how we first found out about Romeo and then to our surprise he was on our Google Reader in USA Today. In our excitement over Romeo being in USA Today we forgot to mention it. ~ Your scatterbrained fur friends, Socks, Scylla, Charybdis & Fenris

Sisters

Mommy says we look like bookends in this picture minus the books. Sisters are good snuggle buddies.

Mancat Monday ~ Socks

Eldest boy bean forgets to make up his bed, so I go lay on it so he has an excuse. He can't disturb me by making it up now can he?

Scylla Sunday

Mommy is behind on her chores. I am helping keep the nice clean laundry warm by laying on it. I am not sure why this upsets her. My fur is very clean and makes the laundry look much better don't you think?

Purple

These azaleas are PURPLE, "Probably the most noted and planted cultivators of Indica Azaleas are ‘Formosa’ – magenta purple; ‘Pride of Mobile’". We thinks the Formosas are very pretty and they get really big. We have a huge one down at the pond.

Grandma gave us this PURPLE verbena. It did so well in the Whiskers Memorial Butterfly Garden Mommy bought some pink and white verbena to go around Whiskers' grave.

We like the color PURPLE and we have lots of PURPLE plants in our yard.

Flowers on Friday

Mommy was so impressed with how well the purple verbena did in the Whiskers Memorial Butterfly garden that she decided to move the Bugleweed and replace it with verbena.

She got some Aztec Raspberry Verbena, she got some pink too but we don't have a picture of it. We will try to get one for next time.

Our favorite is the Shades of Pink Superbena. We don't know if it will do good though as it said it was an annual. It is growing very fast and has blooms from the palest pink (almost white) to the very darkest pink. We will try to get a better picture of it.

She also got some Aztec in white. If the Aztec does good we would like to have all the colors one day.

Mommy moved the Bugleweed to the bed with the Stokes' Aster in it. We hopes it will do good there.
All the azaleas are blooming even the giant ones up by the house.

Thursday Thirteen ~ Books

Thirteen Books I Read Recently

  1. Sins of the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon - How Acheron saved Ias from being trapped as shade. We also meet Dark Huntress, Dangereuse St. Richard. Stryker as usual has come up with a plan to hurt Acheron. He has fermented rebellion among the Dark Hunters in Mississippi in order to kill Alexion (one of the few people Acheron is close too). Xirena will be reunited with her sister Simi and that may be more trouble then even Acheron can handle.
  2. The Pagan Stone by Nora Roberts ~ The last book in The Sign of Seven Trilogy and it's heartbreaking. Gage finally realizes he is ready to settle down with Cybil, only to discover the way to defeat the evil is for Gage to sacrifice his life.
  3. Irish Tweed by Andrew M. Greeley - It's a Nuala Anne McGrail Novel. The kids are being picked on by bullies at their school. Their nanny and her fella are the victims of an old
  4. feud. And Dermot is given the memoir of an Irish Immigrant who becomes one of Chicago's first women doctors.
  5. Why Does My Dog Act That Way by Stanley Coren - interesting book about the personality of dogs. It has a Dog Behavior Inventory, but it's better suited to dogs older then Fenris, so I didn't fill it out. I'll probably do it once he is older. Very upsetting chapter about the dog fighting industry and how they steal peoples pet cats and small dogs for bait. They actually prefer house-cats as they are usually declawed and can't harm the dogs they are training. This awful "sport" must be stopped, the people who are involved in it are truly sick individuals. Uplifting chapters about hero dogs who have saved people or other animals.
  6. Promises in Death by J.D. Robb - Dallas never disappoints. Amaryllis Coltraine (introduced in a previous book) is murdered with her own weapon. Eve finds justice not only for Amaryllis but for the man she left behind.
  7. Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult ~ very sad story full of ethical issues and moral dilemmas. Charlotte sues her OB-GYN (who used to be her best friend) for the "wrongful birth" of her disabled daughter.
  8. Dark Side of The Moon by Sherrilyn Kenyon - Stryker continues his plot to destroy the Dark Hunters, this time with the help of the human police chief in Seattle. Ravyn is not only a Arcadian shape shifter he is a Dark Hunter. In cat form he can endure sunlight, the big question is can he overcome Susan's allergy to cats.
  9. Until Death We Do Part by Sherrilyn Kenyon ~ Esperetta of the house of Dracul was on her way home from a convent when her party was attacked by Turks. She was rescued by Velkan Danesti and fell madly in love with him even though the Dracul and Danesti families were sworn enemies. The Danesti's disowned Velkan and Vlad Dracul hunted the young couple down. In an attempt to save Esperetta Velkan gave her a sleeping potion and tried to convince her Father she was dead. Not believing Velkan Vlad stabbed her anyway, then tortured and killed Velkan. As you can probably guess Velkan sold his sold to Artemis and became a Dark Hunter, but this story has a twist. Velkan had bound his sold to Esperetta's so when he sold his soul and became a Dark Hunter Esperetta was brought back to life too. Now 500 years have past and they have to work out their marital problems or risk being killed by The Order of the Dragon.
  10. Airman by Eoin Colfer Books II & III ~ Tells of Conor's imprisonment on Little Saltee how he eventually escapes and rescues Queen Isabella and his family from Bonvilain.
  11. The Dream Hunter by Sherrilyn Kenyon ~ Arik makes a deal with Hades in order to spend two weeks as a mortal man with Megeara Kafieri ( for those who have read Acheron, Tory's cousin.). Unfortunately the deal might alert Zeus that his curse on the Oneroi is weakening so M'Adoc sends assassins to kill him. Lucky for Arik Megeara is more then she seems and has some pretty powerful allies. M'Adoc tricked Arik into going with him and kills him but never fear Megeara is willing to go to hell to get her man back.
  12. Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kennyon ~ Artemis sends Katra to kill Sin, but instead they fall in love, in between saving the world from the Gallu and the Dimme How will Artemis handle being a Grandma?
  13. Dog Training in No Time (How to Understand and Train Your Dog in Just Minutes a Day) by Caroline Davis and Keith Davis - Good tip for preventing your dog from nipping or biting; use a repellent spray.
  14. The Heart of the Matter by Paul Loeb & Suzanne Hlavacek - I didn't find this book particularly helpful or engaging.

Updates

Scylla - I am fine, there is just some fur missing under my eye, but the skin isn't broken or anything. Mommy will just help me keep the area clean and she'll watch to make sure nothing changes.

Fenris - I am 17 weeks old. I got my rabies shot today and I won't see Dr. Lisa for a year unless I get sick. Mommy is going to take me in to be weighed every once in awhile so we will know the correct dosage of heart-worm and flea medicine to give me as I am still a growing boy. Oh, in case you are wondering I weigh 28.9 pounds. Mommy also took me by the library, I waited in the car for her. Don't worry she parked in the shade and she left the windows down with me securely fastened, so I couldn't get out. Then we went to get a tag for Daddy's motorcycle, they have a drive through so I got to see the people and guess what they gave me dog biscuits to enjoy while we waited.

Two Tails Tuesday

Charybdis: Fenris likes to sit under the Jungle Gym. I like to sit on the Jungle Gym out of his reach.

Fenris: I like playing ball with Daddy. Charybdis is watching us play.

Here I am trying to get a grip on the ball so I can carry it.

Hey Mommy!!!!!! I didn't know you were outside. Come play with me.

Mancat Monday ~Socks

I like to sleep in eldest boy beans bed.

Sometimes Charybdis joins me when I nap in there. Scylla never sleeps in eldest boy bean's bed. Scylla prefers the window, dresser or the toy box.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter
~Alasandra, Socks, Scylla, Charybdis & Fenris

Above is a sprig of our English Dogwood, we hopes you will take it home and enjoy it.

We may be unable to visit for awhile. The parents went to see the Grandparents for Easter, Saturday. Scylla stayed out very late and when she finally came in for youngest boy bean she had fur missing under her eye. Mommy is keeping a close eye on it but she may be going off to the vet Monday. So far it doesn't look infected or anything so we have our paws crossed it stays that way and no trip to the vet will be necessary.

The Grandparents gave Mommy some plants so they must be taken care of and the laundry and the housework must be caught up on before Mommy will help us visit so we are going to lend her a paw right now. Before we go we wants to thanks everyone for coming by and wishing Scylla & Charybdis a Happy Gotcha Day Saturday and helping us trash the house while the parents were away. It was tons of FUN!!!!!! ~Socks, Scylla, Charybdis & Fenris
