This is what will happen April 15th - she will get a complete physical examination, the administration of the first Immiticide Injection (It is a deep intramuscular injection into the lumbar muscles so IT HURTS. Mild swelling and some soreness at the injection site may occur for a few days) and Prednisone will be prescribed. A complete blood count, laboratory panel and a thoracic radiograph will be preformed. she will be observed throughout the day. She can either stay overnight or we can bring her home. We will probably bring her home as we thinks she will feel safer and less stressed here. She will have to go back the next day, and the physical examination will be repeated.
The most critical period is the first few weeks after the adulticidal treatments. During this time the heartworms are dying and there is a great risk of pulmonary emboli (blood clots) forming. The dead worms must be absorbed by the body. Tuiren's activity will be SEVERELY RESTRICTED DURING THIS 60 DAY PERIOD.
We will keep you updated. But we want to remind everyone PLEASE USE HEARTWORM PREVENTION. THE TREATMENT FOR DOGS IS VERY PAINFUL AND THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THE DOG WILL SURVIVE AND THERE IS NO TREATMENT FOR CATS.

Paws crossed here!
Sending large rumbly purrs for sweet Tuiren to do well with this arduous treatment. We hope it works well and is successful. We don't think we have this type of worm in the UK so it's very interesting to learn about.
Good luck Tuiren!

Sweet Tuiren, we are keeping you in our thoughts and purrs today.
Back in the mid 1990′s Angel Cerise was diagnosed with feline heartworm, back when they knew very little about it in cats. Mom saw the nasty worms on an ultrasound of her heart. There were at least 5 of them. Our vet put her on steroids and antibiotics. She survived and lived to be the ripe ol’ age of 17 1/2. All the vets always called her their miracle kitty. After that she was always on the preventative. Angel Cerise was an indoor only kitty, but mosquitoes can get inside the house. Keeping Tuiren in our thoughts and purrs today.
I will cross my paws for you - you are in my thoughts :o)
