What's the Problem?

It's ironic that Wheeler, who lent a city generator to a private golf course (which was against the law) has chosen to make an issue of this.

The suspension stems from 17 firefighters participating in the construction of a gazebo for College Park Elementary on Oct. 21. Seven of the firefighters were on duty at the time. The on-duty firefighters had fire trucks on site and selected to involve themselves in the voluntary project in uniform, according to Wheeler. She also said although he did not know about the incident until afterwards, it was still Gray's responsibility. "He (Gray) set the project up," Wheeler said. "And it was without guidance. Ten of them were in volunteer status and that's exactly the kind of thing we encourage, but unfortunately seven of them were on duty and that's illegal." Wheeler said the on-duty firefighters were being paid by the city for the time they spent working on the school grounds.

Excuse me, but since College Park Elementary is a PUBLIC SCHOOL, what was so improper about the firefighters helping with the construction of the gazebo? Perhaps the Mississippi Press can do a follow up article on what the firefighters would have been doing if they hadn't been helping with the construction.
