John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on the 3rd January, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State.

Tolkein, if I'm not mistaken, was at the Battle of the Somme in WW I. It was unreal. 60,000 British casualties on the first day alone. Lyn MacDonald has a great book on the subject, although she argues that Paeschendale was the one that changed British society forever. She's got a book on that, too.
