That was nearly 13 years ago, and Draper has been publishing books ever since, she told a group of students at Biloxi Junior High on Wednesday morning. In fact, she doesn't teach in the classroom anymore; she is a full-time writer who also travels to schools and conferences across the country. Draper has written nearly 20 books, was the 1997 National Teacher of the Year and has been on the New York Times best-seller list.
