Many of you who read my blog regularly know we recently lost out beloved cat Whiskers to kidney failure. Today I read in the paper that the Special Kitty Pouch Cat-food that he regularly ate was being recalled because it caused kidney failure in an unknown number of cats. The pet food is manufactured by Menu Foods and they list 40 brands of cat food alone. I didn't even look at the dog food list. The dog and cat food is sold by Kroger, Safeway, Wal-Mart, and PetSmart among others. Please if you have a cat or dog check and make sure your cat or dog's food isn't on the list.
Now I am terrified that our much loved Sockie-Pooh is at risk of kidney failure. He never seemed to like the pouch cat food as much as Whiskers did, he usually just licked the gravy off the top and left the rest for Whiskers to eat. We had started feeding him dry cat food after Whiskers' death because so much of the pouch food was wasted. Still Monday morning I plan to take him to the veterinarian for a kidney function test.
I am outraged that Whiskers' my loving and gentle cat is dead because the pet food manufacture couldn't be bothered to make sure their product was safe for pets to eat. The article states that 10 pets died, I know for a fact that the count is much higher as they aren't counting Whiskers, I can only wonder how many other beloved pets have been killed because of this manufactures reckless behavior.

I immediately thought of you when I heard the report yesterday. This is even more tragic, as it could have been avoided.
How very frightening for all pet owners. I surely hope they find the culprit soon.
It literally made me sick when I read it in the paper.
And I feel so guilty as I choose what he ate. If only I had picked a brand not on the list he would still be with us.
It's also chilling to realize one manufacture apparently makes MOST of the pet food. Brands like Iams, Science Diet and Nutro were also on the list.
It is tragic and I too have lost a cat due to unknown kidney failure.
My cat, Kit-Kat, was taken in off the streets and she was one of the greatest and toughest cats I have ever owned.
She started acting really odd and throwing up all of the dry food she ate and when I took her to the vet the next morning they told me that it looked like she wasn't going to make it.
I asked the vet to run some blood work and they said she had abnormal kidney enzymes and they thought that she may have gotten into antifreeze because she was mostly an outdoor cat, but slept in my heated shed because my dogs live in the house.
I keep everything locked in the shed and she had her own room in there so I knew that it wasn't anything she had gotten into.
I felt horrible after the vet told me that it was my fault because I didn't keep everything locked up.
I still feel horrible about her death, but atleast I know it wasn't something that anyone intentionally did.
It's sad that this is happening to our pet which we love dearly as they are a member of our family, but i do have one question if the pouch food hurts them why shouldn't we worry about the dry foods?
So far no dry cat foods have been recalled.
But at this point I don't trust the pet food companies at all. I am thinking about making my own pet food.
