In another development, Menu Foods, the Canadian firm which initiated the biggest recall of pet food in the nation’s history in mid-March when it recalled 60 million containers of wet and pouched dog and cat food, has posted claims information on its website for pet owners whose pets were killed or sickened by the pet food contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical not approved for food use in the United States and which has caused kidney failure in cats and dogs. http://www.menufoods.com/recall/United%20States%20Residents.pdf
According to the announcement posted at their website, the company says it will “address any reasonable expense incurred by pet owners that we can identify as being caused by contamination of Menu Foods’ products”.
And I suppose Menu Foods is the one to decide what's reasonable?
Pet owners who opt to settle directly with Menu Foods, will be required to file documentation including receipts from the purchase of the affected products, copies of any labels from the products and copies of any records from a veterinarian, clinic of other healthcare facility. They are also asked to save all opened and unopened cans and pouches of the affected dog and cat foods.
I could swear that at one point I was told to return unopened packages to a retailer for a refund, which I did. After Whiskers died from being poisoned I couldn't stand the thought of having that poisonous food in my home, and I had nightmares about someone accidentally giving the poisoned food to my surviving cat and the orphaned kittens we adopted. I wanted MENU FOODS POISONED food out of my home.
The company is also requiring pet owners to fill out a lengthy questionnaire that asks for such information as the UPC codes on the recalled foods, dates the products were manufactured, dates when their pets ate the food, number of cans or pouches their pets ate, and whether their pets had any pre-existing

Want to bet they deny the majority of claims.

Cats and their human companions need to be careful about Menu Foods' offer to settle. The Cat Gergiev has written, in "Menu Foods Expects To Oppose Class Action Certification; Offers To Settle Individually," an explanation of how Menu Foods is trying to trick cats and their human companions so that Menu Foods will not have to go to court and can avoid punitive damages.
