The tribe has been battling Coast residents to get a $375 million casino resort approved in Jackson County on tribal land (it's not tribal land, it's land the tribe bought and it's in a County that voted no to casinos), a move local casinos said could smother their development since tribal enterprises do not pay state taxes. Martin has pushed the casino but is awaiting the results of a Jackson County referendum on the issue.
Jackson County voted no to casinos, so why the Choctaws think they should be allowed to stick a casino on land in our community is beyond me. If they want a casino on the coast they need to put it in Harrison or Hancock County (the two coast counties that voted for casinos).
A casino on highway 57 would have a negative impact on the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, the residents who live in that area, and the proposed Ocean Springs Sportsplex.
