Martin's defeat would end his 30-year reign as chief of Mississippi's largest Indian tribe with 9,000 members. During his tenure, the tribe entered the lucrative gaming market and developed a sprawling resort on tribal land in the red clay hills of east central Mississippi. The resort includes the state's only two inland casinos, a highly rated golf course and a water park.
Though the resort boosted the tribe out of poverty, Denson and other critics have said Martin hired too many non-Choctaws in management positions.
