Part of our curriculum was Consumer Math. The book we used had chapters on how to balance a checkbook, how to create a budget, how to fill out an income tax form, how to calculate interest on a loan and other real life math problems.

I was shocked to learn that the public school kids didn't have anything like it and unfortunately some of the public school graduates don't have a clue how to balance a checkbook, create a budget or fill out their taxes. The push for kids to learn higher mathematics has left many woefully ignorant of how to do simple mathematics necessary to adult life.
