Why universal health care is a bad deal

Bush administration officials again have saddled Congress with an under funded military health care budget by projecting $1.2 billion in savings they know will not be realized, say critics on Capitol Hill.

Does anyone really believe that the government wouldn't under fund universal health care too?

Just look at the countries which have national health care and the mess they are in. Most people end up paying more and what is available is substandard. I have lived through both systems and I still say have the private health care insurance. Even as a lower income earner I would still be better off in the old system. Now I am paying double!

Too me it's a no brainer.

You don't even have to look at other countries. All you have to do is look at the government programs we currently have. No one is happy with them. Medicaid is rife with problems and doctors routinely turn Medicaid patients away because the government is slow to pay and refuses to pay an acceptable amount. Most Medicaid patients wind up in the ER, because they can't turn them away.

Of course the argument is that if the government paid for everyone's care Doctors couldn't turn them away. But if Doctors can't make a living they will find something else to do and fewer and fewer people will choose to go into the medical field. Creating even more problems.

You are so right! At present we are have a shortage of doctors, especially neurosurgeons. They can't attract any trainees and when the present generation of neurosurgeons retired the shortage will be felt more acutely. This will be worsened by the ageing of the population. As it is many doctors in other disciplines have already given up in despair, even among the GPs
