Fenris has Panosteitis

Which is a fancy way of saying growing pains. He will have to be crated for two weeks and take some medicine. Any advice on keeping an active dog crated will be appreciated. Also the Mom needs advice on how often to walk him for bathroom breaks and feeding. ~Thanks, The Cats

Hi Fenris and Cats

We don't usually comment but enjoy reading your blog. Kealani over at My Boo Bear http://mybubear.blogspot.com/
had the same problem recently. Maybe your mom and hers can compare notes.

Any pain iz No Good. We hope you feel better soon, Fenris.

Mom's niece Jennifer had growing pains when she wuz little. Mom use to sit her in her lap with a heating pad and read to her while they snuggled. That probably won't work with Fenris though.

Poor Fenris. For the crate, we have found that kongs stuffed with peanut butter and then frozen or hollow bones filled with a banana/oeanut butter/yogurt misture and frozen will keep them occupied for a while. If you have access to some good solid raw bones, they are great too. As for bathroom breaks, you may just have to use trial and error. Maybe every couple of hours. If you are just sitting doing something, you might also try putting him on a short leash and keeping him close to you. He might like that better than being in the crate all the time. It won't be easy because we think he is like us and loves to romp. Good luck and we hope the two weeks fly.

Hugs, the OP Pack

Poor Fenris. At least it's something that will go away again. We were suprised that he has to be crated to treat this. How strange, don't you think? It seems like you got advice already. Many purrs to sweet Fenris!

Poor Fenris! We have no experience with that in dawgs. The wee lad here has those pains and goes to bed with a hot water bottle sometimes.

Get better soon!

hmmmm that's really really strange... growing pains? I don't think i've heard of that before.... I know that for big dogs that are hard to walk- they recommend something called a GENTLE LEADER which you can get pretty cheap in petsmart (in comparison to most stores). It goes around the nose and the neck- and it lead them by the nose. It looks like a muzzle, but it's not! we have one for ben if he's not listening well- and it calms him down AND he knows we're in charge. It really helps a lot. I'm not saying fenris is out of control- obviously! it's for keeping him quieter on the leash!

Thank you everybody. We are going to visit Kealani, to see how they managed the panosteitis. Thanks for the link Tucker, Daisy and Leo I am glad you spoke up.

OP, Mom thinks the Konga stuffed with yummy stuff will be just the thing to get me in the crate. The good news is I don't have to be in it 100% of the time. As long as I am inside (where there isn't enough room to run) I can be out. I mostly lay at the Mom's feet anyway. She will have to crate me when she is asleep or gone and I can't go out in the yard by myself. I have to go on a leash so I don't run.

Hansel, The Mom saw one of those contraptions. She got me a pinch collar on the recommendation of my trainer but she says now TREATS work just as well. ~Fenris

We had no idea that dogs could get those. Poor Fenris.

We had lots of issues keeping our Grete calm and quiet after her 2 elbow surgeries. She was going stir crazy. We took her out every few hours for potty breaks and then tried to do things to keep her mentally stimulated without too much activity. She had to be on a leash at all times for a couple of months.
