Today, Keith Elgin Shepherd was found guilty of unlawfully discharging a weapon and animal cruelty but avoided any jail time or significant fines. Judge Thomas Pryal found him guilty on both counts–animal cruelty and unlawful discharge of a weapon. Shepherd was sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation, 80 hours of community service, and a total of $1500 in fines ($500 for the animal cruelty and $1000 on the gun charge). The $1000 is suspended provided he completes his probation without incident. Before sentencing, Shepherd was given the option to accept the sentence and receive a Probation Before Judgment (PBJ) which prevents him from any appeal and allows the judgment to be erased from his record once the sentence is complete. The bottom line is a guilty verdict, a year probation, 2 weeks of community service and $500 plus costs.
He should have got jail time for KILLING Bear-Bear and it stinks that this will be erased from his record once the sentence is complete. I just hope that Rachel and Ryan Rettaliata sue him for every dime he has. I know money will not bring Bear-Bear back but somehow these jerks who kill our pets have to be made to pay.

We can at least hope that if he violates his probation, as reckless people often do, he is brought to justice in incrementing steps.

He is already having legal problems with his former landlord. Apparently they broke their contract and trashed the townhouse they were living in @ the time of Bear-Bear's shooting.
It just utterly disgust me that the judge thought Bear-Bear's life didn't even rate the maximum sentence. ~Alasandra
Me and Charlie are thinking of poor Bear Bear's family and hope that this brings some kind of closure if scant justice for them. The man who did this does not seem to be a good man to begin with - I feel sorry for his own dog and only hope his doggie is being treated with the kindness that this man truly failed to show with regards to Bear Bear.
Take care

Forget who it was but the suggestion was made he should be made to spend his probation doing community service scooping poop.
