Scylla Sunday

Hey everybody, I caught a MOUSE!!!!!!!! Would anyone like to come play with it with me?

Some of you have noticed my new svelte figure and asked how I shed all the pounds. Well I am eating Hill's Prescription Diet Metabolic Weight Management Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food, you has to have your vet give you a prescription for it. This is how I got started on it, if you are interested.

For awhile I didn't seem to be losing any weight, then the kittens came to live with us and I spent more time outdoors and I even got Socks to teach me how to hunt. I have become a very good mouser, Arty Mouse would be so proud of me. I play with the kittens and I am teaching them to hunt and do stuffs. Anyway the pounds just seemed to fly off. I am healthier and happier.

If you are obese please see your veterinarian about a safe way to lose weight. It is very important if you are a cat that you don't starve yourself or you could get Fatty Liver Disease aka hepatic lipidosis.

Signs of hepatic lipidosis can be really subtle, so it’s important to watch for clinical signs of the following:
  • Decreased appetite or complete inappetance (i.e., anorexia)
  • Hiding in unusual places (e.g., closet)
  • Weakness or lethargy
  • Icterus/jaundice (a yellow tinged color to the gums or skin, best seen on the ears and eyes)
  • Drooling (often a sign of nausea)
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Small fecal clumps in the litter box (due to lack of eating)
  • Constipation
  • Collapse
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle wasting
  • A weakened neck (the head hangs down more than usual with a chin tuck)
Treatment typically requires 24/7 care for several days to include the following:
  • IV fluids to help treat dehydration
  • Placement of a temporary feeding tube to provide adequate calories (this may be necessary for several weeks)
  • Anti-vomiting medication
  • Appetite stimulants
  • Antibiotics
  • Vitamin K (to help fix clotting problems if abnormal)
  • Potentially plasma transfusions (if severe clotting problems are noted)

Savannah's , Cousin Leo suffered from Fatty Liver Disease.  You can read how Cousin Leo and Lightening survived Fatty Liver Disease at Savannah's Paw Tracks. This was the first time we had heard of this lethal disease in cats, so we think it is very important to spread the word about the dangers of a cat not eating enough.

It sounds like the extra exercise really helped in addition to your diet, Scylla! Paws up for your weight loss.

Thanks for the offer, S., but I will stick with my toy mouse to play with. I'm pretty sure I'm afraid of real mice!

Love and licks,
Cupcake
