Wildlife Wednesday (Wayback in April)

Mommy was afraid we weren't going to have goslings this year. Mommy thinks they hatched the day it came a flood. See Mommy saw the Goose sitting on the nest, then we got lots of rain so much rain the island was partially submerged and when it stopped raining and we walked down to the pond the Goose was no longer on the nest and there was no sign of Mr. Gander and Mrs Goose.

Mommy feared the worst, but then weeks later they appeared with these 5 goslings.  Mommy thinks they must have went in the woods where it was more sheltered while we had all the rain.

Most of the goslings are smart and stay close to their parents, but a few wander off which is dumb cause there are all sorts of things that can get them. Cats are not a threat to goslings, in fact they aren't even afraid of us. Once upon a time when Whiskers was still alive the Geese came up to the house where Whiskers was sunning himself in the driveway and a gosling waddled right over him. Whiskers didn't move a muscle. Mommy laughed so hard!!!!!!

And when Scylla and Charybdis were wee kittens they thought they would play with the goslings but Mrs Goose and Mr Gander didn't approve and chased Scylla and Charybdis up a tree.

The Geese are polite for the most part and ignore us. They aren't afraid of dogs either sometimes they go in the backyard with Fenris & Tuiren. When the goslings are small they can fit through the holes in the fence and their parents just fly over.

They usually stay around the pond though.

Although they seem pretty fond of the Hummingbird Cottage.

They actually came to watch Mommy weed and a gosling waddled right into her lap for a closer look. The red stuff is Coral Bean, it is a native plant that blooms in the spring. The rest of the year it just has green leaves and seed pods that burst open to reveal RED bean like seeds. ~ATCAD

My human loves geese and wishes she could have a couple... but she thinks even they would be no match for the coyotes and bobcats we get around here.

These are wild geese that come to our pond every year to hatch their goslings. They have left now and we sort of miss them.

How fun to have the geese family come to your pond every year. We can't believe they actually wander into the fenced in part of the yard with the dogs out there.

Thankfully, those babies hatched and taken to high ground before that flood! We have a family of Canada Geese in the parking lot at the office who just don't want to move to allow vehicles to get in or out! I talk to them, tell them that they need not fear us but they must yield the right of way. LOL!

Ma & Pa Goose were smart!

They are all over the place here, gathering for flights to warmer climes.

Goslings are so cute! They hardly seem like they can walk. But they manage... MOL!
