Wicked Wednesday

Tuiren & Fenris are ready to wish all the ghouls, creepy crawlies and spooks visiting us a Happy Halloween! Fenris has named his spider Charlotte and he is trying to teach her to write. Tuiren on the other had is trying to hide from the bats. She keeps barking about "The Birds" and Alfred Hitchcock. We think she has been reading to many horror books with Mommy.

We couldn't resist showcasing Socks' and Yang's lovely green eyes with the green background and accents. They are all ready to play some tricks, but we think all the lady cats will agree looking at these two handsome mancats is a real treat. ~ATCAD

It's a little spooky here

We wanted to dress up for Halloween, so we got in Mommy's costume drawer. Scylla found a pirate's eye patch. Unfortunately it wouldn't stay put, even when Scylla used her spooky eyes.

Charybdis found a bloody hand. She tried biting it, but it just laid there.

We thought about putting the clown costume on Socks but he ran away. We don't think he wanted to play with us. He is being invisible for Halloween.

We are going to be Scylla & Charybdis for Halloween, we are named after famous monsters after all (You will just have to imagine us as two sea monsters, Boooooooo!).

Thirteen Things about Halloween

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future.

The Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes.

In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

Pumpkin carving is a popular part of modern America's Halloween celebration.

People have been making jack o'lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack."

In Ireland and Scotland, people began to make their own versions of Jack's lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips or potatoes and placing them into windows or near doors to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits.

In England, large beets are used.

Immigrants from these countries brought the jack o'lantern tradition with them when they came to the United States. They soon found that pumpkins, a fruit native to America, make perfect jack o'lanterns.

It is believed that if an unmarried girl keeps a rosemary herb and a silver sixpence under her pillow on Halloween night, it is quite likely that on that very night, she would dream of her future husband.

People used to believe that Satan was a nut-gatherer. Nuts were also used as magic charms on the day of Halloween festival.

If you put your clothes on inside out as well as outside walk backwards on Halloween night. At midnight you will see a witch in the sky. People used to believe witches were the devil, or that they were consumed by evil.
