True Believers, Agnostics and Atheist
Nah! this post doesn't have anything to do with religion the title refers to the bird worlds split over the Ivory Billed Woodpecker (aka The Ghost Bird). The Ivory Billed Woodpecker was believed to be extinct, the last confirmed sighting was in 1944. Then miraculously it was sighted in Arkansaw in 2004 and early 2005. Or was it? Did the people who spotted it mistake the Pileated Woodpecker for the Ivory Billed?

Ah yes, the Lord God Bird. I recall this story first breaking. It was HUGE. The other biologists and foresters I work with all felt like I did and this news swept through us like a wildfire. I was very optimistic about it when I read the initial reports because of the credentials of those reporting sightings. I have become much more guarded since. I am still hopeful that the creature has somehow made it, but I fear not.
I really hope it has made it. I have a cousin who is an avid birder, and I know she was very excited when it first came out.
I am a rank amateur. But from my birding expeditions I know that birds very seldom stay still long enough for you to get a really good look or good picture so I do understand why it is so difficult to say one way or another. I really admire birders that can say that's a _________ woodpecker, or _________ hummingbird or whatever. The best I can do is identify the general family it belongs to.
I saw your letter in the Hattiesburg American. I am working on a post.
I got excited when I saw the title of this post while searching for atheist homeschool blogs. :(
But woodpeckers are fine too. My 10 year old runs into the house in a panic everytime he sees a large pilated in the preserve across the road. We hope he's out there...maybe disguised as a pilated!
Sorry the title was a tad misleading. Let me know if you actually see an ivory billed woodpecker.
