Mississippi Sandhill Cranes

Hidden in blinds with binoculars and notebooks, dozens of helpful volunteers will watch the sun rise over the wet pine savannah of southwest Jackson County and count Sandhill cranes.

Senior wildlife biologist Scott Hereford with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued an invitation for other biologists as well as land managers, birders, educators, students and naturalists to participate in the annual autumn crane count Nov. 2.

Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Proposal to take wolves off the endangered species list

Of all the protected and endangered species in the United States, none has provoked stronger feelings than the wolf, reviled or revered, depending on the person. And few have been as visible a success. The proposed delisting, as it is called, comes because the population of wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains is surging.

Nah! this post doesn't have anything to do with religion the title refers to the bird worlds split over the Ivory Billed Woodpecker (aka The Ghost Bird). The Ivory Billed Woodpecker was believed to be extinct, the last confirmed sighting was in 1944. Then miraculously it was sighted in Arkansaw in 2004 and early 2005. Or was it? Did the people who spotted it mistake the Pileated Woodpecker for the Ivory Billed?
