NEW YORK --A black professor discovered a hangman's noose on her office door at Teachers College at Columbia University on Tuesday, and police said they were investigating the case as a possible hate crime.
"You would think, Columbia being such a diverse campus and New York being such a diverse city, it shouldn't happen here," she said.
Apparently New York has it's own racial problems.

So, you think those thousands of protesters from Jena will now caravan to NYC for the tv cameras?
SURE they will . . . ;-)
Somehow I think this will be the last we hear of the New York incident.
There seems to be a perception by the rest of the nation that IF something like these incidents happen in the South it's typical (and requires busing protesters in from other parts of the nation) and if it happens up North, well it's some sort of aberration.
I really wish everyone could just get along.
That wasn't NYC, or LA the state even. It was LA the city! ;-)

CNN recapped what happened to Rodney King 10 years after the race riots. Particularly interesting to me was this statement from his former lawyer:
Those who hoped he would emerge as a civil rights figure or a force behind police reform have been disappointed.
"I've thought about what an opportunity lost," said Grimes, who was King's attorney from 1992 to 1994 and sued him over legal bills.
. . . Had it been someone more worldly, more articulate, more insightful, the public might have benefited from it."
At least Jena got an orderly protest and not a riot.
From what I read all the protesters in Jena were from out of town. Obviously in LA (the city) the rioters were locals. Makes you wonder.
